CONSULTING TOURISM & HOSPITALITY
As an objective observer with an agile approach, I can bring to the table something that those who are close to their business sometimes cannot. I bring an overview of the current tourism scene, and a heartfelt appreciation for many aspects of this fragmented industry. Sometimes I am brought on to a project by a PR agency needing a hotel aficionado, sometimes I work independently. Initially, consultancy gathered pace by word of mouth, as I worked as a travel journalist. I have helped clients in the West Country, Norfolk, Spain and Mexico, as well as working for destination marketing organisations from Cornwall to Cumbria.
One day, I arrived for a freelance shift on The Daily Telegraph’s Books section, weighed down by a heavy backpack. Straight from Heathrow, after travelling alone in Asia. The travel editor spotted me and soon I was working for the Telegraph’s travel desk. Next, I became travel editor at The London Evening Standard, targeting editorial to an urban audience. I travelled the world. Yet the place I considered most happening was Britain. I quit my job to focus on the destination I wanted to know better – my own backyard. I landed a role as hotel critic for The Guardian and traversed the country filling a contacts book with great little places to stay, restaurants, shops, castles and cafés. I wrote my final Guardian review in 2013, then returned to magazines (where I had started, years before, at Elle and World of Interiors) and created Great British Breaks for Condé Nast Traveller, a column which ran until 2016.
